A newborn Ayeyarwady dolphin was spotted a few days ago in the Ayeyarwady Dolphin Protected Area (ADPA), according to U Han Win an official from the ADPA on May 15.
“A local spotted it on May 12. The dolphin is only a few days old. It has stripes which are usually seen in newborn dolphins. The stripes fade after one month and this dolphin’s stripes are still there. That’s why we assume it is a baby,” he said.
The newborn dolphin was sighted in the dolphin protected area near Indaung village. The baby dolphin seemed to have been separated from his pod, said U Han Win.
According to a survey conducted this year within the dolphin protected area - which starts from Nandaw Kyun (Mandalay Region area) in the eastern part of the Ayeyarwady River and Mingun village (Sagaing Region) in the western part of the river, to near Yay Taw Pagoda in Kyauk Myaung township (Sagaing region) - a total of 26 dolphins were spotted. However, one dolphin died in March, leaving only 25 dolphins; The newfound dolphin has increased the population in the protected area back to 26.
